You’ve said to yourself a million times, “Tomorrow I begin! My ultimate diet and weight loss journey begins first thing in the morning (right after I scoff down this pizza and block of chocolate tonight)!”

And then this is how your week unfolds:

Day 1 – You’re a diet/weight-loss ninja! You got up at 6am to head to the gym, the carrot sticks you took for snack time are munched down, the chicken salad at lunch is enjoyed and the lean protein with veg at dinner is washed down with your eighth glass of water for the day.

Day 2 – You stick to the plan again. Yep you’re well on your way to getting your black belt in healthy eating.

Day 3 – you stick to the plan again…almost. Because you’ve been soooooo good, you sneak in a small glass of wine with dinner. One little glass won’t hurt right?

Day 4 – The office is celebrating Dorris’ birthday with cake! You decide to have a slither because it’s a birthday and that’s what you do on birthday’s right? You eat cake and get drunk and dance on office desks (oops, no, that last bit’s the office Christmas party). Now you’re feeling pretty guilty and by teatime, because “you’ve already failed,” not only do you have wine with dinner, but you have a bowl of ice-cream too. Might as well, you’ve already messed up right?

Day 5 – It’s been a hectic week, no carrot sticks or salad were prepped for today’s lunch (your guilty head had collapsed into your ice-cream bowl remember?) so you’ll just have to buy your lunch. That cheesy, creamy pasta in the café counter looks phenomenal, oh and so does that “bigger than Texas” white-choc, raspberry muffin. Oh what the hell, might as well eat it, you stuffed up this week anyway, and it’s the weekend now. You’ll start again next Monday!

Sound familiar?!

Yep I get it, I’ve done this a million times myself. And what I’ve learnt is…

the “I’ll start my diet on Monday routine,” never works.

This never-ending cycle is a bitch of a place to live in. It has us living in a world of false promises, and false promises birth inside of us the children of guilt, shame & disgrace – their resounding message, “I failed…again.”

There is a way out of this world. It’s taken me many, many years to find an escape root. Today, I’d like to share some of my escape plan with you. Three things this plan involves are:

1.) You need to change your perspective around food

When you reside in the land of “I’ll Start My Diet on Monday,” you see food as a vehicle for either putting on or losing weight, which means the governor of your world, is fear. When we fear food, we create a world full of enemies. And when we live in a world of enemies, anxiety, frustration, exhaustion, stress, a sense of deprivation and even depression result. For this reason, we’re constantly looking for something comforting to fill ourselves up with, something to give ourselves solace, an escape. And guess what that something is? Food!!!!

So a new, friendly, perspective on food is needed. For example, try this out:

“I’ll choose this healthy food because it will nourish my mind, body and soul giving me the strength and energy to chase my dreams and live in the realm of my unlimited potential.”

2.) You’ve been brain washed into thinking you’re not enough

Unfortunately, the world we’re brought up in, through our culture and media, has brainwashed us into thinking that we should look a certain way and if we don’t, well then we should always be trying to. The weight loss and fitness industry is worth millions of dollars, they don’t want you to feel like you’re pretty enough or skinny enough. So they’re going to keep spending millions of dollars to keep you feeling ashamed, so you’ll keep buying their products, and they’ll keep making the big bucks. It’s not your fault that you feel like a lesser human being because you don’t look a certain way, it’s actually a virus you’ve caught from our culture, just like the flu.

Let me take this moment to tell you something very important. As long as you keep trying to lose weight, to look a certain way, you’ll never be happy, because your whole sense of self is tied up to an externality. You’ll keep comparing yourselves to others, so you’ll never reach your end destination, and you’ll keep putting off your life, living in an elusive dreamland called, “One Day When I Lose More Weight.”

Which brings me to my last point…

3.) The solution to weight loss and body satisfaction is self-love

Permanent weight loss, or even just plain ol’ body satisfaction, is an internal process. It’s a shift from trying to change our externalities, to one of changing our heart. It requires us to face the reasons for why we battle with food, with our bodies and with our own unique forms of self- hate. It’s about looking into the perceived holes that litter our soul, and making the effort to fill them up with love and kindness. And I talk from experience when I say, that when this happens, your battle with weight, food and with the scales, will come to an end.

The diet doesn’t start after the next piece of cake, tomorrow or next Monday, it begins right now, if and only, you decide, to place your feet on a new path, not the path to weight loss, but the path to self-love.
