Listen, the sauce/condiment section of your diet can be a little tricky, because soooooo many of the sauces, dressings and seasonings we find on our supermarket shelves, are jam packed with sugar, preservatives, thickeners (often wheat), MSG and who knows what else?!
Did you know:
- There’s two teaspoons of sugar in every 15ml serve of conventional BBQ sauce? And it also contains ingredients like wheat, gum, glucose, acid and caramel!!!
- Supermarket shelf mayonaise and dressings are generally made with soybean and canola oils (highly toxic) and have numerous sugars added to them like corn syrup & invert syrup. Plus with ingredients like polysorbate 60, acidity regulator, phosphoric acid & modified food starch, why would you want to eat it?
- Supermarket shelf Asian sauces, like sweet & sour or Chinese Barbecue can have up to eight teaspoons of sugar per serve!!! And there’s a rainbow of colourings, creative ingredient names and preservative added to these too.
- Seasoning powders like Gravox and stock cubes are a mixed bag full of interesting ingredients: Maltodextrin, Maize Starch, Shortening Powder, Vegetable Gum, Colour (Caramel lll), Flavours, Dextrose, Anticaking Agent (450), Canola Oil, Yeast Extracts… What the?????
So what sauces and condiments can you use? After all, it’s often the sauce that’s the hero of a dish, plus condiments and sauces just make our food taste totally phenomenal!
