Birthdays are a wonderful time, if you’re not scared of eating cake, party pies, drinking alcohol and other celebratory food at parties! But for some strange reason they can make people feel anxious and vulnerable when really, they are a time to celebrate life and the ups and downs that come with it.

So why do people feel like this?

What makes people feel as though going to a party is the TOUGHEST activity of the weekend?

FOOD!

Yep, people feel that because they are going to a party, all they will have to eat is the above!

Now, I always say that you can only control what you can control. Food at a function is one of those things that unless you are hosting, you will have no control over. But this doesn’t mean you have to get all anxious, worried and feel like you need to all of a sudden have a bout of gastro to avoiding going! Like everything there are always options:

1.     Eat BEFORE you go to the party to ensure you don’t snack or junk food.

2.     Choose the right foods at the party that fit in with your ‘ratios’ that we spoke about in earlier articles. There are always a handful of healthier options no matter what party you are at, like veggie sticks and dip for example, or the meatballs and chicken wings as opposed to the sausage rolls and pizza.

3.     If you want to eat, drink and be merry, and you know that sometimes that is more than fine, then do what I do and have a big training session beforehand! The harder you can workout before the party the better!

It is important to note that eating nutritious food after a training session is your top priority so start with the best post workout options first (Meat, Salad, Veg etc..) and then after you have done that and if you are still eyeing off that cake, deep fried samosa or frankfurt, then indulge a little – you have just smashed yourself at the gym so you can have a little piece of something!

I wouldn’t recommend this be the go to option every weekend, rather at times where you know you have eaten and trained really well and feel like indulging without the added guilt.

If you need a workout, go back and look over our earlier article on the 10 minute home workouts you can do. Smash out 3 or 4 of those before you frock up and not only will you be mentally switched on because of the endorphins you have just released into your body, but you will more than likely eat less of the less nutritious stuff too!

Always remember, celebrations are just that – a time to celebrate. Never use ‘food’ as the reason to not enjoy spending time with family and friends.

Tip: If you want to drink Alcohol, then make sure you choose the healthier food options, don’t do both!  Read our Avoiding The Party Binge article for more details on this.
